UPLOADING & EDITING
VIA MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE
UPLOADING VIA FRONTPAGE
The exact steps depend
on what version of Frontpage you are using but the principle is essentially
the same.
- Open Frontpage, and
choose FILE / OPEN WEB or OPEN SITE
- Browse your hard
drive for the folder containing your files and open that main folder.
(If Frontpage comes back and says it needs
to add files select OK or YES)
- Click OK or
OPEN button until you see all your site files in the big window.
- On the top text menu
click on FILE.
- Scroll down and look
for PUBLISH WEB or PUBLISH SITE and click on it.
(You may have to hit the down arrow to see
all options under the FILE listing)
- In Frontpage
2000/2002:
...you will need to select whether to publish ALL files or just changed
files. If this is your first time, choose ALL files and click OK
In Frontpage 2003:
...you will be presented with a pop up window - choose "FrontPage or
SharePoint Services" then in the "Remote Web site location" field below,
type in http://yourdomain.com
(where "yourdomain.com" is replaced with
your own domain name or IP address...)
Click
OK
Click on "Publish Web site" button in bottom right of screen.
If you receive a
message about overwriting files, generally you can say "Ignore & Continue" to
overwrite files on the server with the ones from your hard drive. If this is
your first time you will want to do this. If you are unsure, you can always
decline to overwrite files.
When it is complete
your website is uploaded.
EDITING VIA FRONTPAGE
Since there are several
versions of the software currently used by people, we will describe how to in
the most current version at this time, FrontPage 2003.
- Open your copy of
Microsoft FrontPage 2003.
- Go to FILE at
the top then select OPEN SITE.
- Make sure "My
Network Places" is clicked on in the left area of the pop up window.
- The FIRST time you
do this, you will need to type in your domain in the "SITE NAME:" box -
don't forget to start with
http:// - so it might look like:
http://yourdomain.com
(where "yourdomain.com" is replaced with
your own domain name or IP address...)
Note - once you have done this successfully,
all you have to do is double click on the domain name in the big white
section...
- Click the OPEN
button.
- You will be prompted
for your user id and password - this is the same as in your welcome email
for
FTP.
- Enter it and check
the "Remember my password" option if you don't want to type it every time.
- Click the OK
button.
- Now your website is
in front of you.
- You should nowsee a
list of files and folders on the left - if you do not, just go
to VIEW at the top and select FOLDER LIST
(or hold down the ALT key on your
keyboard and hit the F1 key simultaneously)
- Now you can
double-click any .htm or .html file to open it for editing.
- You are working on
your site LIVE so as soon as you hit SAVE your changes are live on
the web - no more uploading to worry about!
A WORD OF CAUTION:
Any files with the following extensions: .txt .js .css .pl or
.cgi need to be edited using NOTEPAD or another plain text editor.
To do this in FrontPage - RIGHT-click over the file and choose EDIT
USING then select Notepad or your text editor from the list. |
